Background to Innovation SuperNetwork
The Innovation SuperNetwork is a unique regional programme, helping to cultivate a stronger innovation eco-system in the North East of England and support innovative businesses.
The programme is expanding to include support delivered through cluster organisations and business groups, ensuring that innovation support is available to a much wider range of businesses than is currently the case. In addition, we are working closely with partners on increasing the level of support available in the region for open and collaborative innovation projects.
Background to The Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria
The Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) is one of fifteen AHSNs set up with the aim of spreading innovation at pace and scale across the healthcare system, in order to achieve the ultimate goals of improving health and generating economic growth.
The AHSN NENC is a membership-based organisation that provides bespoke services to its Member Organisations, which include local Foundation Trusts, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), and local universities. In particular, the AHSN NENC supports the identification, harvesting, protection, commercialisation, adoption, and dissemination, of healthcare innovation originating from within its Member Organisations.
Further, the AHSN NENC provides support services to industry wishing to access the NHS with new and improved products and services.
During the course of the last few years, the AHSN NENC has been funded by both NHS England and NHS Improvement. Recent alignment of the national network of AHSNs to the Industrial Strategy and in particular the Life Science Strategy has resulted in The Office of Life Sciences additionally providing funding to support the creation of fifteen regional Innovation Exchanges, each of which will sit within a regional AHSN. With the ultimate aim of driving economic growth, the Innovation Exchanges have five areas of focus, which can be summarised as follows: –
- Identify needs and communicate regional priorities
- Act as a first point of contact to signpost innovators to areas of need, further support, or market access opportunities
- Broker regional partnerships for validation of products in real world settings
- Support scale up of innovations to spread at a national level and beyond
- Better co-ordination and sharing between the fifteen AHSNs
The post of Health Network North Engagement Manager is currently available to support the delivery of our Innovation Exchange with a particular focus upon supporting challenge-based project calls that focus upon regional unmet needs, as well as driving our Health Network North initiative. Health Network North works in partnership with the regional heath economy, including the Integrated Care System and the NHS England Clinical Networks, to address unmet needs in the NHS and facilitate the co-creation of solutions, between industry and the NHS. Support for the adoption of appropriate solutions across the North East and North Cumbria region and wider area is also provided.
