DigVentures‘ ‘Deep Time‘ is an experimental platform uniting citizen scientists, archaeologists, land custodians, and heritage bodies to detect previously unknown archaeological sites on a massive scale.
By harnessing the curiosity of thousands of people and connecting them with available sources of archaeological Big Data – including LiDAR, Artificial Intelligence, satellite imagery, and the UK’s Historic Environment Record – Deep Time enables the rapid identification of areas where archaeology is present, and in so doing, points a way forward to helping make smart decisions about its future in the face of escalating climate change and human interventions.
Deep Time also has a clear social purpose; beyond detecting archaeological sites with increasing speed and accuracy, the platform empowers public participation and fascination, unearthing the real value of connecting people and place, past and future.
