Bari Tea: North of Tyne Innovation Recovery Grant

Bari Tea Brewery secures grant funding to obtain new innovative manufacturing equipment

Bari Tea Brewery, a Northumberland Tea Brewery based in Amble-by-the-Sea, spotted a growth opportunity through investment in new manufacturing equipment, with the added bonus of streamlining processes helping to create significant labour and material savings.

Thanks to grant funding support from the North of Tyne Innovation Recovery Grant, Caroline Stewart, owner of Bari Tea Brewery, has now been able to invest in modern equipment to help improve cost efficiencies and crucially allow the business to scale and grow.

“The North of Tyne Innovation Recovery Grant website provided clear guidance on availability of the grant and the application process. We received clear responses to any enquiries we had and found it to be a quick and simple grant claim and payment process.”

Looking for Support

Bari Tea began its life in 2010 as a contemporary tearoom in Alnwick. The award-winning tearoom established the Bari Tea brand in the local area, but with the arrival of the pandemic and an opportune lease break, the business made the innovative decision to move into tea production – complementing its existing services.

With the business designing and packing all blends in-house, yet outsourcing production, the directors were keen to develop and improve both labour and material efficiencies – especially given world prices were so unstable.  With a move to a new depot at Amble in 2021, the business aspired to manage its own production – keen to invest in modern production and packing equipment to satisfy potential sales growth in both the online and B2B market.

Support from North of Tyne Innovation Recovery Grant

The North of Tyne Innovation Recovery Grant has supported Bari Tea with a grant to support investment in equipment – futureproofing the business with potential capacity to scale and grow. Manufacturing and process equipment has been successfully installed at the beginning of 2022 and is now fully operational at the Amble site.

Impact of receiving the grant and support

The investment in new manufacturing and packing equipment has significantly increased the overall efficiency of Bari Tea Brewery’s production process and allowed them to focus on their growth strategy for local, national, and potentially international audiences with a new retail website due to be launched this year.

The business has recently been awarded the ‘Produced in Northumberland’ accolade and has been able to blend their first tea – Northumberland Bari Breakfast Tea – in Northumberland, with more Northumberland blends to be released later in the year.

“The new manufacturing and packing equipment has significantly increased the overall efficiency of our production process only made possible by the North of Tyne Innovation Recovery Grant. There is a huge sense of pride when we blended our first tea – Northumberland Bari Breakfast Tea – in Northumberland. It’s a great start and brand to base our soon-to-be-launched new retail website, and provides a real spearhead for our B2B growth strategy.”
